Thank You!

Many thanks to all of you who read my last post and commented, and also to all of you who didn't comment but who kept me and my mother in your prayers.  I cannot express how much that means to me.

My mother had surgery to replace the valve in her heart last Tuesday.  As of today (Friday), she is doing extremely well, and (fingers crossed!) may actually be released from the hospital into a convalescent home next Sunday or Monday!  woo-HOOO!!  I will still have to go up there every other weekend for a bit to pay bills and help my grandmother, but at least things are on the upswing for her.  I can handle that.

This has been quite a week of revelations for me.  Living in a house with no TV, no computer, no husband or cats, and no access to most of my friends or family except via land-line telephone, I discovered that I do indeed have a limit to how much solitude I am comfortable with.  I also discovered how difficult it is to deal with so many things on someone else's behalf that are no trouble when I deal with them for myself.  Being the rock everyone else is leaning on is NOT fun, especially when you have no one to lean on yourself.

I'm sure I'll have more to say later, but now I'm so exhausted that I'm falling asleep at my keyboard, so I will just say again, Thank you!

  1. Oh, I've been working flat out lately and haven't been online too much, so I seem to have missed your last post. I'm so sorry to hear your mother and you have been through such an ordeal. Sending you my very best wishes for her speedy recovery! xo

    1. Thanks so much! Hey, we've all got lives of our own, so it's hard to keep up with other peoples' as well! ;-)

  2. I'm glad to hear that your mom is doing well and that some of the pressure is off you. I know what the isolation is like. Any time I visit my folks, who live a considerable distance from me, it's like stepping into another world. No music, no movies, no intriguing conversation from anybody in that entire state, etc. So, welcome back to your world.

    1. That doesn't sound pleasant at all! My mom's isn't quite THAT bad, at least not when she's home. It was more that there was NO ONE there but me (unless you count the bazillion spiders!), and it's not my home, or even my hometown. But I learned to appreciate my own home and what I have even more, so perhaps in that respect it was worth it.

  3. Yup. Yup. Yup. I can attest that being the "go to person" and "the rock" isn't fun. It's frustrating and a challenge. When you add extended family into the mix it's downright anger-inducing.

I would love nothing more than to toss my smart phone and limit my on-line stuff to an hour a day. I love the internet for the connections and friends I've made through blogging. I love the internet for the ease of research. I hate social media and getting sucked into FB crap. HATE IT! But, I need FB so that I'm up-to-date on local activities. It sucks. I wish we could go back to fliers in stores, land line telephones, and real time visiting. sigh ...

    1. You are sooo right! Fortunately, other than my grandmother, my extended family duties are limited to phone calls updating them on my mom's situation. Now she's in a position to call them herself, so it will be easier on me.

We don't have a cell phone, only a land line (unless you count the throwaway in the van for emergencies only). However, I wouldn't give up the internet, because of research and because of all the friends I've made there who don't want to write letters! I hate FB as well, which is why you rarely see me commenting on anything there.

I'd LOVE it if we had the time to "go calling" like they did back in the days before telephones existed. Did you know that Victorian Trading Co. actually makes "calling cards"?? I'd love to get some, but most of my friends live in other states, so I don't think I'd get much use out of them! :-(

    3. It is, although there are now other things taking its place! But none as drastic, so I probably shouldn't complain. (On the other hand, why NOT complain??) :-P
