Moving Up with the Cemetery Friends

Earlier this month I attended the first 2014 meeting of the San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery Friends... and I leaped off the cliff and volunteered.  I am now the official Volunteer Coordinator.  Eeek!

Normally when I volunteer for things, I like to stay behind the scenes as much as possible.  I don't mind doing grunt work, but DO NOT put me on stage with lines to speak!  I do not want to be in charge or out in front.  However, I decided that I needed to do this so that I could include the experience on my museum resume, since most museums now depend on volunteers a LOT more than they should have to.

My duties will include knowing who will be attending each function (other than regular meetings), assigning people to the various tasks, and also recruiting more volunteers.  Speaking of which, I managed to snag my first (potential) new volunteer, too!  :-)

  1. Good for you! Taking on this new position and including it on you resume sounds like a good idea. Besides, you're now intricately involved with cemetery upkeep. It doesn't get much better than that.

    1. I just hope they send me the current list of volunteers soon. I've noticed that they tend to be not so great with followup.

And I agree, it doesn't get much better than that! :-)

  2. I just volunteered to sit on the board at the local community hall, but only because all I have to do is vote (they didn't have enough members for a quorum). I'm with you ... put me in the background doing the grunt work, but don't make me have to talk to people or anything!

It's going to look really good on your resume though, Lucretia!! :o)

    1. Well, that sounds pretty easy! I was on my community garden board for pretty much the same reason, but I quit after a year because I just didn't feel qualified, and also I got tired of listening to the in-fighting. Hopefully your group won't have too much of THAT going on!

  3. Sounds great! Good luck! I haven't tried to organise anything since a picnic that nearly no one came to, but I am sure you will do better, just get everyone's contacts so you can bother them as much as possible! :P

    1. Thanks! I'm actually still waiting for them to send me the volunteer contact list. If I don't have it by this weekend, I'm going to start badgering them for it! ;-)

  4. Oh, how great! And good for you for stepping outside your comfort zone! You just never know where things like this might lead... beyond the resume considerations, I mean. Something about this experience, or the people you meet, might just put you on a path to something unexpected and wonderful. You just never know. :)

    1. Thanks! I'm finding that I'm stepping out more and more as I become more comfortable in my "gothy" shoes, hehehe! And I'm hoping being a part of this group will indeed steer me toward something rewarding, whatever it might be.
