Starting a New Museum Meetup Group!

Well, I'm no longer a member of the Goth meetup group; it was my choice, but I'm still a bit sad.  The main organizer and the other co-organizer, both friends of mine, left the group, and someone else took over.  I just didn't have the cash to become the organizer again.  The new leader is a DJ at a club on the other side of the bay, and so far all he has ever put up as meetups are his club's Goth Nights and a single band event.  No one else has put anything up for months now, and the one event I suggested since he took over was ignored.  So, I hustled my black-covered tush right out of there!  I can still go to Death Guild without being a group member, and NO points taken off my Goth Card for that.  :-P

Anyway, I was looking around on the site for museum meetups, and did find a couple; unfortunately, most of them aren't all about museums, they just have occasional museum events, and the one that IS all about museums seems to be focused on art museums.  Bleah!  Art is fine, but there are soooo many other kinds of museums to visit around here.  So as of next month (after I get paid), I will be starting my own museum meetup group, offering visits to all sorts of museums around the SF Bay Area, and see if anyone rises to the bait.

Of course, one of the first events will be a visit to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum, with a personal tour hosted by Yours Darkly...  ;-)

Now I just need to think up a good group name.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  1. Great idea. Good luck with getting it off the ground. As for names, I'm drawing a blank.

    1. That's okay, thanks for at least thinking about it! :-) I really hope this turns out well, as it will be fun as well as (hopefully) profitable as a networking tool. I'm going to add it to my LinkedIn profile and to my resume.

  2. Sounds fabulous. Last weekend we visited the British Museum - their ancient Egyptian section is awesome, the mummies, caskets, grave goods etc just gobsmacking. One of the exhibits that really caught my eye was a stone relief of the goddess Ishtar / Astarte - just beautiful. Perhaps there's a group name amongst the gods?

Also saw the Rosetta Stone & Elgin Marbles. If you ever get to visit the UK you'd be in clover going there - and it's all free.

    1. Actually, I may be doing that in April 2017! If I do go to Crete then, as currently planned, I will be stopping in London for an extra 1-2 days on the way home to meet an online friend for the first time in person and go to the British Museum with her... fun stuff!! I was totally shocked when I checked on the admission price to the museum and found it was free. Why can't WE do that over here??

    2. There are 1 or 2 additional 'special' exhibits that they charge for, but there is so much there that if you are visiting for a few hours the free stuff more than fills in the time. It's HUGE! And just amazing. They have tightened up security in there so expect to be bag / rucksack checked - and it does get very busy.

Oooooh! I hope you get to visit in April!

  3. Although the goth subculture is rooted in music, it's much more than that. I feel that often, the emphasis is placed on clubbing even though many of us are now of a certain age. There needs to be other activities that reflect other aspects of the subculture, such as cemetery gatherings, literary discussions, and yes, museum gatherings. I hope you're successful with pulling something together.

    1. Thank you, I hope so, too!

Unfortunately, you are too right about the emphasis still being placed mostly on clubs as goth activities. But honestly, the majority of members of the meetup group never actually showed up to anything, and most activities were sadly under-attended, regardless of what or where they were, including the club meetups. Hopefully a few goths will end up in my museum group, and I certainly don't intend to tone my style down. Should be interesting! :-)

  4. I wish there would be more meet ups for museums, etc, too. Club nights are too far away for me to get home from. Then again the last meet up group I was in was totally unsuccessful anyway. Haha.

    1. I know what you mean. There is one club I like, but it's in San Francisco, which means driving almost an hour each way AND paying a $5 bridge toll! Usually not worth the hassle unless I can carpool, which rarely happens. ::sigh::
