Here are the questions:
1. How would you like to die?
2. What would happen to your blog?
3. Who will you leave money to?
4. What happens to your body after you pass?
5. What do you want your funeral to be like?
5. What do you want your funeral to be like?
6. What will you miss the most that still exists after death?
7. How will you want to be remembered?
And here are my answers:
1. How would you like to die?
Peacefully in my sleep would be ideal. However, if I have to be awake, I'd like it to be as painless as possible, with my favorite music playing. (And although I love both songs, I think I'd rather hear "Stairway to Heaven" on my way out instead of "Highway to Hell", just to be on the safe side!)
2. What would happen to your blog?
Don't know, and don't really care as I won't be here! That's assuming it still exists by then, as I plan to live for a very long time yet. ;-)
3. Who will you leave money to?
Money? What money?? Who has money???
4. What will happen to your body after you die?
I want it to decay and go back into the earth. I DO NOT want to be embalmed for any reason! Just put me in a shroud, or at most a cardboard coffin, and bury me deep.
5. What do you want your funeral to be like?
Whatever makes my surviving family feel best. But I want "Dust in the Wind" to be played either at my funeral or at the graveside.
6. What will you miss the most that still exists after death?
Chocolate, of course!! And my family, and music, and dancing. And my cats.
7. How will you want to be remembered?
I hope I will be remembered with love, and that I lived an authentic life.

DeleteMy father passed away one week ago today, just two weeks after we got my parents moved here. I spent his last night on Earth staying up with him, tending to him while he struggled and passed in and out of consciousness. Due to his experience I have become more sure of what I would want--if I have a choice of course!
ReplyDeleteLike you, I would want a natural burial. In my state a person can have a "direct internment," which means no embalming fluid, etc. provided it's done within 24 hours. The problem is finding a cemetery willing to do such a thing. There is a group here in town that is looking to turn some land into a cemetery for direct internment. They don't want delineated graves however, and although I understand the reasoning behind that, the goth in me loves wooden caskets and grave markers. So, who knows how this will go.
Otherwise, I'm pretty much in agreement with your on the points you make here, although chocolate didn't come to mind. On point 5 however, I would not want to defer the decisions to my family. Their religious beliefs are very different from mine and I do not want a Christian service or prayers said over me. If a Wiccan wanted to say a few words I'd be okay with that.
As for music, about a year or so ago I purchased a CD from the Russian Gothic metal band called Amederia. On the album is a slower song called "The Dance of Two Swans." Now, I have no special connection to swans in particular, but the first time I heard that song I realized that I would like it played at my funeral/memorial. The song contains some wonderful male and female vocals and harmonization. As it approaches the finale it picks up the pace with a beautiful lead guitar solo. Isn't it interesting how these things can come to us so unexpectedly?
Nightwind, I am SO sorry to hear of your father's passing, and I'm very glad you were able to be with him then. I'm sure that meant a lot to you both, and to your mother as well.
DeleteWe do have "natural burial" cemeteries in CA, and there's even one fairly close to my, but it's HUGELY expensive, although the others I've read about are not all that costly. Most of the ones I've read about don't want marked graves, either, although perhaps carved "natural" stones might be allowed.
Of course, I had to listen to that song you mentioned -- it's beautiful! I think it would be lovely to have at a funeral service.
Again, please accept my sympathy.
I'm so glad that you listened to that song. I simply love it. My guess is that the direct internment here, would not be all that expensive; that is, if it could occur on that donated land.
DeleteThank you for your sentiments, Lucretia!
You know, you might want to think about looking into direct interment in your area, perhaps with that group you mentioned, even though they don't like the idea of grave markers. You might be able to change their minds, and who knows what other good you could do. Just a thought...
DeleteThanks for the tag! I posted mine! Please excuse the last comment autocorrect is weird!
ReplyDeleteThanks, I just read and commented on YOUR post. :-)
